Advanced Power Management Module in System-on-Chip(SoC) Integration/Prof. Ke-Horng Chen

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are two retinal diseases that result in the degeneration of photoreceptor cells in the retina and the vision loss. Implantable artificial retina devices are feasible to restore vision for the patients. The research team Wu proposed a structure that integrates an external goggle with the intraocular solar-cell powered sub-retinal chip implanted in the eye. No wire penetration through eye ball is required. The external goggle contains a micro camera and a light enhancement device. The enhanced image is then projected onto the chip in the eye. The chip converts the image into pulse currents to stimulate the retinal cells to restore vision. Preliminary in-vitro and in-vivo tests have been conducted to validate our designs.
