Tin Ka-Ping Photonics Building An Outstanding Education and Research Center for Photonics in Taiwan

Overview
The Department of Photonics (DoP) was established in 2004. The graduate education arms of the DoP consist of the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering (IEO, founded in 1980) and the Display Institute (DI, established in 2004). Both Institutes are the first institute of its kind in Taiwan. Since its installation, more than one thousand students had graduated with Ph.D and M.S degrees.

Why Study Photnonics?
Listen to Einstein's advice: “For the rest of my life I want to reflect on what light is.” After pondering on the nature of photons, Einstein came up some inspiring ideas which effectively catalyzed the development of photonics. For those interested in science and engineering, the field of photonics provides a wealth of interesting and challenging opportunities.

What are the career opportunities at DoP-NCTU?

The objective of the academic program is to create the best conditions for the transfer of knowledge and know-how in photonics. A graduate degree in photonics science and engineering will prepare you for a wide variety of satisfying career paths, including such as fundamental research, energy-oriented photonics, optic communication, display technology, and biophotonics and Sensing.

DoP currently has 29 full-time faculty members, and 13 honorary professors. Seven of our faculty members are the fellows of OSA, SPIE, and SID.

Photnonics— a Rapidly Growing Industry in Taiwan
The photonic industry in Taiwan is rapidly growing with bright future. From optic storage, display, solid-state lighting and solar cell to biophotonics, ripples initiated at joint academic and industrial programs are merging into a tsunami. Alumni, faculty and students of DoP play a crucial role in this photonic surge, which is expected to become an impact on the Taiwan economic future.
