National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) had the distinct honor of hosting a high-profile delegation from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) on September 22, 2023. This visit marked a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two prestigious institutions and opened up exciting prospects for future academic endeavors.

The UTS delegation, led by Mr. Iain Watt, Vice President, included Professor Eryk Dutkiewicz, Associate Dean of Electrical and Data Engineering, and Distinguished Professor CT Lin from the School of Computer Science. Professor CT Lin also holds the title of emeritus professor at NYCU's College of Electrical and Computer Engineering, establishing a distinctive connection to the visit.

The visitation of UTS was made possible thanks to the proactive efforts of Professor Li-Chun Wang, the Dean of NYCU's College of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who had previously journeyed to Sydney in July. During his visit, Dean Wang successfully reconnected the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two universities, laying the foundation for this significant visitation and a forthcoming MOU signing ceremony.

One of the key highlights of this ongoing collaboration is the renewal of the dual doctoral degree program, a testament to the continued commitment of both institutions to fostering global academic excellence. UTS, known for its truly international character with over 10,000 international students, holds a prestigious QS ranking of 90. NYCU and UTS share common values, including a close connection to industry, a dedication to diversity, and a focus on empowering female students in STEM fields. UTS, in particular, is actively involved in indigenous education and cultural preservation.

During their visit, the UTS delegation had the opportunity to tour NYCU's Nano Facility Center, led by Director Horng-Chih Lin. The delegation was deeply impressed by the world-class clean room facilities at the center, which are open to national and international students. UTS expressed keen interest in sending their students to NYCU, offering them the chance to participate in NYCU's Short-term Research Program or the dual doctoral program. This would enable students to immerse themselves in the high-tech training environment and establish strong connections with the semiconductor industry in Taiwan.

In conclusion, the collaboration between NYCU and UTS promises to be a potent synergy, as both institutions harness their strengths in distinct yet complementary fields. NYCU excels in semiconductor technology, while UTS is renowned for its prowess in green energy, including areas such as hydrogen. Together, they aspire to tackle global challenges and advance efforts to create a more sustainable world.

This visit represents a significant step forward in the shared pursuit of knowledge and innovation, and both institutions are excited to explore new avenues for academic collaboration in the future.
