Dr. Hsueh-Cheng Wang, an associate professor from the ECE college, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, led Team NYCU composed of 14 students from Department of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Electronics, and Robotics Program to participated 2022 Maritime RobotX Challenge held in Australia from November 11th-17th, 2022. The competition, organized by the international unmanned system association, RoboNation, and co-sponsored by the Australian Department of Defense, attracted 20 universities from around the world.
In the preliminary rounds, the team led all the way and qualified for the finals in the shortest possible time. The competition required a stable and robust system. All complex algorithms depended on basic abilities in order to succeed. It is worth noting that all of the teams that entered the final have performed well in previous competitions. During the final, NYCU demonstrated excellent on-the-spot performance and mastery of new tasks, standing out from the other teams and winning third place. Hsueh-Cheng Wang stated that participating in the competition is an ongoing learning process that equips students with the skills of establishing objectives, dealing with challenges, working in large teams, and adapting to unexpected circumstances. He believes that one of the most important benefits of participating in such contests is the development of confidence with international visions.
In the finals, NYCU demonstrated excellent on-site performance and mastery of the new tasks by completing autonomous surface missions with the use of software and hardware developed by unmanned surface vehicles and drones, distinguishing themselves from the other finalists and achieving a remarkable third place. This honor was also reported by “The Australian”.
